The Captain · You hire your own

Your captain drives. You party.

The Disco Boat is chartered bareboat — for the term of your booking, the boat is yours. Federal rules require a credentialed operator at the helm, so you’ll hire a captain directly. We’ll send you a referral list of independent USCG-credentialed local captains we’ve worked with, and you’re free to hire any credentialed captain you like, on or off that list. They know San Diego Bay, handle the route around wind and tide, manage docking, and stay off the dance floor so your group can stay on it.

How it works. Pick your charter date and length when you reserve. We’ll send you our referral list of independent USCG-credentialed captains — call the one you like, agree on the rate, hire them directly. You arrange it with them, you pay them, and nothing for the captain runs through us.

Why a captain is required. It’s a federal rule, not a house policy — a credentialed operator has to be at the helm. It’s also just smart. San Diego Bay is a working harbor — Coast Guard cutters, ferry crossings, commercial traffic. The Disco Boat is a 32-foot pontoon with a tall rooftop deck and a passenger-load that moves around. A captain who knows the bay keeps the boat going where it needs to go and the docking clean.

What your captain handles. Boat operation, route planning, docking, safety briefing at the dock, on-water support the entire cruise. They'll cue the route to find the best sunset angle, dodge the wakes that would mess up your bar setup, and stay out of the photos.

FAQ

Disco Boat questions, answered.

How big is the Disco Boat and how many guests fit?
The Disco Boat is a 32-foot Suntracker Party Cruiser — a double-deck pontoon with a cabin lounge below and an open-air rooftop above. Maximum 12 guests per charter — a hard federal cap on a bareboat charter, not a house preference.
What's onboard?
A custom 5-seat rainbow bar with jewel-tone stools and green tile. A chrome dance pole at center. Mirrored ceiling panels. Black-and-white checkerboard flooring. Custom leopard-print walls. A retro-wrapped helm with psychedelic swirls. Fold-down side windows. Upstairs: turf-padded rooftop deck with oversized bean-bag seating, a sip bar, and a full-size mirrored disco ball.
Can I drive the Disco Boat myself?
Not unless you hold the appropriate USCG credential. Federal regulations require a credentialed operator at the helm. Most guests hire a captain from our referral list — though any credentialed captain you like is fine by us.
How much does the captain cost?
Captains set their own rates and you pay them directly, so it varies. Ask them when you book — the charter fee here covers the boat only.
Can we bring our own drinks and food?
Yes. BYOB welcome on every charter. We provide a cooler with ice. Bring snacks, mixers, garnishes — set up the rainbow bar however your group wants.
What's the rooftop deck like?
An open-air lounge above the cabin. Turf-padded floor with oversized bean-bag seating, a small rooftop bartop, and a full-size mirrored disco ball that scatters sparkle across San Diego Bay at golden hour. Best seat on the boat for photos and sunset.
What are the fold-down windows for?
The cabin's side panels fold down to open the interior to the bay — full-volume party mode with the breeze coming in. Close them up when the marine layer rolls in and the cabin becomes a weather-tight lounge. Same boat, two energies.
Where does the Disco Boat depart from?
2700 Shelter Island Drive, Point Loma, San Diego, CA 92106 — on San Diego Bay, a short trip from downtown and Coronado. Full dock and parking instructions arrive with your booking confirmation.
Can I play my own music on the boat?
Yes. The boat speakers support AirPlay and Bluetooth. Bring your playlist, hand the captain the bar tab, take the rooftop. Curated-playlist add-ons are also available.
